Nintendo recently announced that it will be announcing the games that will be coming to Switch in the latter half of this year in its Nintendo Direct. And according to a recent update, it seems this year Nintendo is planning to be all about speedrunning.
The company has announced its new collection of NES games for the Switch called the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, but the twist of the bundle is that it is built entirely around making players play really fast.
The collection pretty much features 13 different NES games including Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and a whole lot of Super Mario Bros. But instead of playing through the whole game players are tasked with completing small bits of these classic blockbusters to get the best completion time possible.
According to Nintendo, there are more than 150 time-based challenges that are spread across the included games and the collection will also be coming with single-player and local-multiplayer capabilities with support of up to eight players.
And if you’re a Switch Online subscriber, you will also get access to the “World Championship Mode” to submit your best times in the available five challenges that rotate each week and compete for a spot on the global leaderboards.
(And if the Nintendo World Championships name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s taken from Nintendo’s irregularly occurring esports tournament.)
This collection is more like the NES Remix and tweaking the games to make the challenges feel a bit more unique.
Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition launches on the Switch on July 18th.
